A series of attacks have been affecting some online poker sites and
casinos for the last few days, creating a series of questions about the online
poker sites’ security and preparation to face any future situations. Among the sites
attacked, Full
Tilt Poker is probably the most affected, the site was down and not accessible
for a few days and it even was redirected to a ghost site. According to
official sources, the apparent reason of this malfunction was a DDoS (Distributed
Denial of Service) attack, which saturates the target machine with a huge
amount of external communications requests, slowing the site and making it
unavailable for the general visitors. The online poker and casinos’ servers
were saturated with these phony requests; the attacks began around February 10th
and kept going until yesterday.
The list of affected sites includes Full Tilt Poker, Party Casino, Titan Poker, Virgin Games, CD Poker and Europa Casino as well a series of Russian online gambling sites.
The degree of the attack varied depending if they had any methods to repel the continuous attacks. Is clear that some sites were not prepared to fight such aggressions, some of them went down several times in the last days distressing many players including those taking part at the final table of the FTOPS main event. The sites affected by the attack haven’t released any official comments on this matter yet and the motive of the attack still under investigation.
