Should the Main Event be Changed?

I have been
hearing a lot lately that the World Series of Poker Main Event should be changed. Some pros
believe that the buy in should be raised or that the 50 thousand HORSE event
should be considered the real main event. To all these agreements I say
you’re wrong.
The Main Event at the WSOP is tradition. It has been the biggest and most
important tournament of the year since tournament poker became something meaningful.
There is not one poker player in the world that hasn't played in the main
event, or would die at the chance to. This is why year after year the
field keeps getting bigger and bigger. (Except this past year of
course)
Ever since Chris Moneymaker won the WSOP Main Event, the average player has realized
that they also have the same shot. If he could do it why can you or
I? This is what is great about the Main Event. While the field is
definitely star studded, the average Joe has just as much chance of capturing
the gold, cash, and spotlight of the world, as does Phil Ivey. It is the
most prestigious tournament to win and definitely the most difficult.
The people who argue the buy in should be increased or the game changed are
just plain wrong. Just because more people have discovered the great game
of poker and are willing to give it a shot, does not mean years and years of
tradition should be changed. Saying the buy in should be raised to get
rid of all of the players playing for fun is like saying if the Devil Rays won
a World Series of Poker against the Mets then baseball should increase the amount of
innings in games. Because if there’s are more innings, then the better
team would eventually come out on top. This would not make the game
entertaining though. The reason why sports are so great is because every
team has a chance of winning. If the same team won every year then nobody
would watch.
The main event is, and should be, the same way. Everyone should be able
to play that is able and should have equal opportunity. I do not
understand why the big name pros feel the need for a buy in increase. It
should just be that much sweeter when a pro beats the huge fields. So
suck it up pros!
