Cyber attacks to online sportsbetting and online poker sites don’t seem to ease, the most recent case of cyber hijacking is Gala Coral, one of the UK’s major sportsbooks and casinos, Gala’s main sites Eurobet, Gala Casino and Coral Bookmakers were hacked this week and remained down for about half an hour due to what seems to be a new wave of unstoppable and undetectable denial of service attacks. Several weeks ago Full Tilt Poker and some other major online poker rooms suffered a similar situation in which thousands of accounts are simultaneously generated to slow and finally freeze the servers.

"This is a very worrying step we have seen in botnets, we have no way of responding to this without working with law enforcement. The attacks will come from many hosts in small volumes and they are going to be very hard to spot. If they can do that to us, a large gaming company, than think what they could do it they find a way to target companies like BT or the nuclear power industry." said Peter Basil, information security officer of Gala Coral.

According to an internal investigation and research, attackers invested several months planning a way to infiltrate the sites using stolen information to open the accounts needed to generate the denial of service (DDoS) attack. The unusual traffic patterns were camouflaged using thousands botnet computers during the attack and by imitating the normal habits of regular users. Bassill said these attacks have brought several other websites down and that the attacks are often preceded by strange demands that sometimes can go for more than $100,000.
