Full Tilt Poker Strategy GuideThere are many different sports or games with tournaments to decide champions. In the major sports such as basketball there are separate leagues for women and men at both the college and pro level. Golf is another great example where men and women play in separate leagues. There have been numerous debates as to whether or not women can compete with men on the same level. There are sports or games where any physical difference between men and women is negligible or insignificant altogether. I believe poker is one of those games.

As both live and online poker have grown in popularity over the last five years the number of players has grown exponentially. It is only natural that some of the new players coming into the fold would be women. Some of the top pros have been, are, and will be women. The level of play at the amateur level by female players is increasing all the time as well. Some tournaments are tailored to female players. There is even a ladies event at the World Series of Poker.

Previously women’s events were used to help nurture and grow the female base of poker players. The idea was that women playing women would not be as intimidating as men playing women. Traditionally poker rooms have been filled with males and for some females this can be a tough environment to try learning about poker.

A major poker magazine also has a series of poker tournaments geared toward women. The tournaments are specifically for women and according to the tour founder relatively few men, if any, wanted to play in the women’s only events. The tour founder further said that in the past they would simply try to discourage men from playing to avoid running afoul of discrimination laws. So are ladies only events even legal? In the next article I will look into this increasingly relevant question.
