There are many different approaches and answers to the question of “How much should I buy in for at a poker ring game?” First of all, each level has a minimum that you must comply with and a maximum that won’t let you sit back on the table once you have reached it. I usually mix up the amount I buy depending on how the amount of poker chips on the table in where I’d like to sit down. If everyone is under the maximum, I might want to save myself a few dollars and maybe split the difference between the table max and the table minimum. Sometimes you come to the only open table where 3 or 4 players have reached the table maximum. If I see this I always buy-in for the table maximum.

Then another factor that plays an important role is the limits you are playing. if you are at the lowest levels on Full Tilt Poker, the 0.05 /0 .10 tables where the table max of $10 might be a little much for the level so you can get away with anywhere from $2 - $5 and still be around the stakes of the other players at the table. Now the higher the level you go your sure to always find more players above the table maximum. So buying in for the table maximum is almost always a must. Some people will tell you that no matter what level you’re playing you have to go ahead and buy-in for the table max, especially if no one at the table is close to it, so that way you can always chase straights and flushes a little more and not hurt your table stack that much. But I guess at the end of the day it all comes down to the players themselves, and what are you most comfortable with losing at any given table.
