Bluffing
can be a very effective poker strategy but it can also cause your demise, the efficacy
of bluffing depends on how you play it, where you play it and who’re you
playing with. While playing at the poker table you will notice that you can’t
win every hand you play. Most of the time the cards you hold miss the flop turn
and river, now, you can always fold if your cards miss hitting the flop or you can
also bluff at the pot in hopes of winning it without having good cards. No
player can bluff all the time, bluffing at a pot is one of the most risky plays
you can do in a poker game but at the same time is probably one of the most
common poker strategies during a game. Now, bluffing is about convincing the
rest of the players on the table that you have more chances to win, a good
bluffer knows a lot about poker, but also knows some about psychology and some
about acting.
The combination
of these three elements is significantly important when a player bluffs; pulling
off a bluff at the poker table sounds easy but in reality is not that simple, the
player sometimes has to commit to the bluff to the very end in order to pull it
off successfully and here’s where the psychology plays an essential roll when you’re
bluffing. First of all a player should learn to recognize which players are
most inclined to swallow a bluff, a good read is indispensable and getting
familiar with the type of players you’re dealing with is something that takes
at list a few hands. Acting is also indispensable when you’re bluffing; the
player has to keep a "poker face" to convince the rest of the table that
you have a winner hand.
Bluffing
can also cause you a lot of trouble, so make sure not to bluff all the time. A
repeated streak of bluffs will call attention to you at the table and wont work
all the time. When you do bluff you have to try to put your opponent on a situation
in where he thinks that you have better chances to win the pot. Try to avoid
going all-in on a bluff because your opponent just might be holding the nuts.
Also try not to go all-in on a bluff with a small amount of poker chips because most
of the time your hand will get called just out of sheer pot odds. If you
successfully pull off a bluff and get the other players to fold never show your
cards to them. Always keep the other players at a table guessing as to what
cards you hold and make them pay to see what you’re holding.
