Recently
there has been a new trend in Poker, not only because of the massive popularity
of the game around the world, but also because poker tournaments are a
great way to raise money for different charity events. A lot of local
organization are now hosting No Limit Poker tournaments as a way to
bring in a new audience to fund raising beyond the Bingo
Games. Even some online poker rooms are operating as a business based on the
collection of funds for different local charities.
The allure
of Poker and popularity of the game have driven poker players from the casinos
into their local club banquet hall and helping to support
good causes by playing cards. The local clubs i.e.: Moose Lodge, Lions Club and
even some churches are able to raise needed funds this way and poker money is
helping more people than the Bingo games in some communities.
Celebrity
Poker events for fund raising have also grown in popularity. The Playboy
organization holds a yearly tournament to benefit the Urban Health Institute.
Jennifer Harmon hosts a charity event for the NSPCA against animal cruelty.
Several organizations are even holding charity events on online poker rooms.
Recently I
was able to participate in a charity event at the Lions club to raise money for
the Blind. The buy in was $75 for 2500 in chips and an add on upfront for $50
for another 2500 in chips. The split was 60% of the original buy in for the
charity and the remaining 40% and all of the add on dollars went into the prize
pool. It was well run and lunch was provided. The game paid out 4 places so the
awards were nice and it was all for a great cause. If you can find a game near
you or just a tournament online or in a casino, that goes towards a good because
it’s worth getting involved with. You can enjoy supporting good causes while
playing a game that you love.
