Early on there were only a few big
online poker rooms. Everyone had to play on those specific rooms or not at all.
For the pro’s, they had to get sponsorships from those room or they were left
to their own devices. Team FullTilt.com, led by some of the biggest names in
poker, shook it up. After getting some financing together they started what is
now the second largest online poker room after only a few years of being in
business. If you have ever dreamed of starting your own online poker room here are a
few things you will need to consider.
First and probably most importantly,
you will need to acquire financing. The financing you receive can come in the
form of private lending from investors or public financing by putting your
company on some type of stock exchange. Either way it costs a lot of money to
start an online poker room. There will be overhead costs on top of the cost of
software that you have developed or license.
Another consideration is marketing
and advertising. Once your company is ready to accept customers it will need to
bring them in. There are currently plenty of poker rooms for a potential player
to choose from, having a good plan to bring customers to you is vital if your
online poker room is to survive. Reaching the broadest base using the most cost
effective means will be important for a brand new online poker room.
Having good security is something
that many people consider important but are not entirely sure how it works. You
will need a team of people who not only ensure all banking transactions are
secure but that player accounts are secure as well. Protecting your company
from hackers is critical to developing player trust and confidence. Without
trust that their money is safe, people simply will not play on your site.
Another part of security is having a team of people to investigate claims of
collusion or cheating. This part of online poker has come up more recently over
the last few months due to some big cheating scandals at major poker rooms.
Having people who actively protect other players from cheater and colluders is
an important security feature.
A good legal team is critical as
well and people often overlook it. It will be necessary to comply with local
regulations and licensing requirements. Setting up an online poker room does
you no good if you get sent to jail for violating the law. Legal counsel can
help you not only setup the corporation but comply with any laws that may
conflict with your business.
These are not the only
considerations and I am only scratching the surface of what it means to not
only own your business but own and operate an online gaming operation. It takes
a lot of time, money, and effort to start a business of this type but if
you work diligently and provide a good product, customers will find you.
