With the proliferation of materials
about how to play poker, the quality of play is improving. Some of the most
dedicated players even use poker software programs to dictate their play against
certain opponents, go over hand history, and track their statistics against
others. The players who are truly hoping to make serious money playing live or
in an online poker site and may even hire a coach. What does it mean that so
many people are doing everything possible to improve their game?
For the most part there are
relatively few books that most players read when it comes to strategy. The
strategies and theories discussed within their books have been read, digested,
and discussed numerous times on the internet. Many people have read and learned
the same thing. If you fall into this category, the only thing that will
separate you from the rest of the pack is your application of what you read. In
addition to applying your knowledge, do not be afraid to pick and choose the
most effective style or play. Playing poker does not have to be done in a
cookie cutter fashion. Utilizing subtle nuances will help you standout from
every other player.
The same can be said for players who
hire coaches. Many of the leading coaching sites advocate fairly aggressive
play in general. To counter this type of teaching you will need to develop an
ability to read opponents and situations in order to make the correct play. If
you yourself have a coach, it is important that you find one that will not try
and force you to fit into any particular mold. Whether or not you have a coach,
it is critical that you adapt your own play to keep your opponents off balance.
You will need to learn how to beat players who have been taught situation based
aggression; doing so requires patience and continued dedication to improvement.
