This morning 100 percent of the unofficial votes on Issue 3 (which proposed construction of four new Vegas-style casinos in Ohio) were counted, and 53 percent of voters were in favor of casino gambling in their home state. The proposal will allow construction of casinos in Ohio's four largest cities: Toledo, Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati.
Each one of these Vegas-style casinos will house up to 5,000 slot machines plus roulette, poker, keno, blackjack and other casino games. Casino operators will be required to pay a $50 million license fee to the state plus another $250 million for casino improvements. Another 33% of revenue will be held for taxes by the state of Ohio.
Ohio becomes the 13th state to allow casino gambling on a plan that passed by a vote of 1.6 million to 1.4 million. One of the biggest promoters of the ballot measure, Penn National Gaming, spent around $16.4 million promoting the new proposal. The Pennsylvania-based horse-racing track and casino operator says they plan to open gambling halls in Columbus and Toledo by 2012.
Dan Gilbert, owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers was also a huge promoter of the ballot measure. Gilbert reportedly contributed $31 million to promote the bill and plans to build the Cincinnati and Cleveland casinos.
"Let's start lighting it up like Las Vegas", said Gilbert after learning of the results of the election. This marks the fifth time that the bill was proposed, having been rejected the first four times.
