World Poker Tour takes place among longest TV shows in U.S
- 2-9-2010
World Poker Tour, one of the most recognized names in internationally televised gaming and entertainment, is about to enter the list of the longest running TV shows in U.S history. When the 178th WPT episode airs on Fox Sports Net (FSN), the series will surpass other long running shows such as L.A. Law (171 episodes), Flintstones (166 episodes), Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Magnum PI (each with 162 episodes); and will be right behind classics such as Seinfeld (179 episodes), Golden Girls (180 episodes) and I Love Lucy (179 episodes).
“WPT’s production team is no stranger to making history, their show propelled the game into the thriving global industry it is today. The WPT production team broke new ground in translating the game of poker to audiences worldwide through innovative formats and high-quality production.” said George Greenberg, Executive Vice President of Programming and Production Fox Sports.
The first WPT episode aired in 2003 quickly launched the show to the number one rating slot on Travel Channel and continues to be the top rated show in network history. By 2004, the WPT popularity among viewers helped the show to get new deals with bigger sponsors including Anheuser-Busch and Cadillac. By the end of its fifth season in 2007, WPT filmed 23 tour stops and celebrated its 100th episode. Last year, the WPT dominated Bluff Magazine Readers Choice awards with nominations including “Top TV Show of 2009” and best Poker Personality in WPT Commentator Mike Sexton.
Currently, the WPT is the number one distributed poker show on the planet, with broadcasts in more than 150 countries, and more than 400 million viewers in the United States. The WPT Season VIII will close in May, 2010 with the return of the WPT Grand Prix de Paris in France. Previous to the last event, the World Poker Tour will make stops in Las Vegas for the WPT World Championship set from April 18th to 24th and will visit Romania from Mar 27th to April 2nd, 2010 for the first event held in Eastern Europe.
