An Evening at La Cage

An exciting recreation of its famous namesakes in New York and Los Angeles, La Cage features the most accomplished female impersonators in the world, highlighted by Frank Marino as a memorable Joan Rivers, in the cosmopolitan tradition of the Parisian cabaret. La Cage plays in the Mardi Gras Pavilion.

The cast of the Strip's sole surviving drag show still vamps like it's 1985, offering lip-synced impressions of divas from Judy Garland to Reba McEntire in a fast, fun 75 minutes. Frank Marino, the comic host for more than 17 years, still dresses like Joan Rivers but has evolved into his own persona. The larger point is "La Cage" always will be more mainstream variety show than campy drag farce. And it still plays primarily to older tourist couples who still find the female impersonator concept as outrageous now as they did in 1985.

If younger folks aren't so easily shocked, but can still laugh at Marino's catty celebrity jabs or Steven Wayne's chest-thumping vamp on Celine Dion, that's just icing on the cake. Sure, you wish more of the show followed Wayne's lead to go beyond what they call the "illusion" of the drag impersonations, the rote lip-syncing that makes Jimmy Emmerson's camp clowning to Tammy Wynette tunes stand out as a welcome exception.
