Position Position Position

Every decision you make must take into account your position.

7,8 off suit is a horrible hand to call in first position, whereas if you're on the button or in the small blind, its not that bad of a hand if no one raises. Also position is very key if you are on the button or in the blinds when you want to steal the blind. This is one of the best ways to slowly add chips to your stack. But be careful, you never want to bet into someone. Make sure you have at least a mediocre hand in case he/she calls you.

Also you have to read the table to understand what is a good enough bet so that no one will call on a limp. You don't want to make a complete bluff and move it all in in case he/she is holding a high pocket pair. So make a bet that is enough to make them think, but also if you are re-raised you can fold with out being dented to bad.

Early Position

Early Position Starting Hands
A A K K Q Q A Ks A Qs A Ko A Qo
Hands to play (s=suited, o=off suit)

These Hands are the only consistently profitable hands. Once you become a better and more experienced player, you can add a couple of premier hands to this and still be profitable.

Middle Position

Middle Position Starting Hands
J J A Js K Qs Q Js A Jo K Qo Q Jo
10 10 A 10s K Js Q 10s A 10o K Jo Q 10o
9 9 A 9s     A 9o K 10o
8 8
Hands to play (s=suited, o=off suit)

Middle position is used best to make the people in a late position call with weaker hands since there is more money in the pot.

Late Position

Late Position Starting Hands
7 7 A 8s K 10s Q 9s J 10s 10 9s K 9o J 10o
6 6 A 7s K 9s Q 8s J 9s 9 8s Q 9o
5 5 A 6s
3 3 A 5s
2 2 A 4s
  A 3s
  A 2s       Hands to play (s=suited, o=off suit)

If you are on the button, then you are looking for hands like these that you would call if there are no raises. The more people in the pot, the better the pot odds to make the call. But you must be able to let them go if you don't hit anything.
