1953 Las Vegas Racetrack
1953 Las Vegas Racetrack
What caught my eye on this map was the Las Vegas Racetrack. The map is from September 1955 and shows the one mile dirt track. The track was named The Las Vegas Jockey Club. The track was closed after operating only thirteen days due to many problems. The track then re-opened in 1954 to host quarter horse racing but closed again after less than 60 days of operation
In 1954 the name was changed to the Las Vegas Speedway where they hosted dirt track racing. Racing events were held on the track in 1954 and 1955 and the most notable was the NASCAR Grand National season race which was pivotal for the future of NASCAR. The last and final race was a stock car event in 1959 when the track closed and the land was parceled out. Those parcels became the Las Vegas Hilton, Las Vegas Convention Center and the Las Vegas Country Club.
October 16, 1955
Norm Nelson drove a Kiekhaefer Chrysler to victory in the abbreviated NASCAR Grand National race in Las Vegas. The event was shortened from 200 to 111 laps due to several wrecks and darkness.
